The Scooby-Doo! Show: High Rise Hair Raiser (1976)

Here is an episode of The Scooby-Doo! Show that is in my opinion just as fun as any episode of Scooby-Doo! Where Are You?

In this episode Shaggy and Fred are looking for a job and find one at a construction site. They soon discover why the position was open when they run into a ghost. At the same time as the ghost is haunting the construction site nearby buildings are being robbed. Could there possibly be a connection?

The Spector is an excellent Scooby villain. He gives off a creepy vibe that really does feel threatening. Yet at the same time he is never too creepy to take away from the lighthearted fun. The construction site is also delightfully atmospheric and pulls you further into the episode and the mystery. All the characters are in great form here with each one being as likable as ever. Shaggy especially gets quite a few good lines and Scooby gets some top notch slapstick. The scenes with Velma, Fred and Daphne are less comedic but hold the viewers attention perfectly. These scenes add to the mystery and suspense and never feel like pure exposition (which they easily could have been).

On the downside, once again there are too few suspects for the reveal to be a surprise. This episode also features the kind of annoying habit of the characters reading the words on screen out loud while we can obviously see and read them for ourselves. This habit is unfortunately even in the best Hanna-Barbera TV cartoons though.

All in all despite a couple of faults, this is a top notch Scooby episode and a delight to all Mystery Inc. fans.
