Scooby-Doo! and The Loch Ness Monster (2004)

A really fun direct to video Scooby-Doo! movie.

This film in many ways feels like a feature length episode of What's New Scooby-Doo? Not only is this a smaller scale mystery than the earlier direct to video Scooby movies but the designs, characterizations and humor are that of the TV show. However if this is like an episode of that show it is like a very good one. The mystery is really good. There are plenty of suspects and all of them would make perfect sense to be the villain. While the mystery is not too hard to solve, it does take some thinking to figure out. The humor is top notch and there are a good amount of laughs throughout the film. Many of them come from Shaggy who is at his most likable and fun here. However all of the Mystery Inc. Gang is at their best in this movie and all of them get their time to shine. The new characters are delightful as well and I would have no problem seeing Daphne's Scottish relatives again in a future movie.  I also love the design of Nessie. In some ways it looks like it belongs in a different film but that is just what makes it work. This gives the Nessie a creepy otherworldly vibe that I don't get from too many Scooby-Doo! monsters. The movie also uses the feature length very well and never feels overlong or like a 30 minute story stretched to over twice the length. Instead the film is just the length it needs to be.

On the downside, the Scottish accents are clearly not done by Scottish people and the fakeness of them can take you out of the story. This movie also has three of those Scooby-Doo! chases accompanied by a rock song. While the first one is a lot of fun in the typical Scooby fashion, by the third time this just feels too repetitive.

Overall this film is a delight for Scooby fans everywhere.

Spoiler: I love how the ending hints that there might actually still be a real Loch Ness Monster.
