Scooby-Doo! and the Witch's Ghost (1999)

With Zombie Island being the best Scooby-Doo! movie, whatever film had to come next would have a lot to live up to. However Scooby-Doo and the Witch's Ghost met the challenge and came out as a sheer delight for fans of the franchise.

Like it predecessor, this film is darker than the average Scooby-Doo! movie. This can be felt in not only the legitimately creepy villain but in the overall atmosphere. As soon as we enter the town of Oakhaven, something feels off and sinister. The town may be outwardly idealistic but there is something in the overall design that feels truly sinister. This is of course most truly felt in the night scenes but can still be felt in the day scenes. The way this is done is surprisingly subtle and something that can't be easily described. This shows truly great filmmaking. For a direct to video movie based off of a TV cartoon, the filmmakers go above and beyond what would normally be excepted.

The storyline is also excellent here. This movie provides a really good mystery. It takes some thought to figure out but once you do it makes perfect sense. The big twist is really good and actually took me by surprise. Sure at times there is a bit of suspension of disbelief required but this is a Scooby-Doo! movie after all.

This film also introduces the fan favorite characters of The Hex Girls. This all girl gothic rock band have endeared themselves to Scooby fans ever since and it is not hard to see why. They are immediately likable, have great designs and their music is actually pretty good.

This is one of Scooby's best movies.
