Scooby-Doo! Where Are You: What a Night For a Knight (1969)

Scooby-Doo's debut is still a lot of fun today.

When Scooby and Shaggy are walking home from a movie when they spy an abandoned suit of armor. The Mystery Inc. Gang returns the armor to the museum. There they hear about the disappearance of Professor Hyde White and a spooky legend about the suit of armor. It looks like they have their first mystery on their hands.

This is the first episode of Scooby-Doo! Where Are You and the first time audiences saw Scooby-Doo! Most TV series (especially cartoons) feel far from fully formed on their first episode and the premiere falls flat in comparison to later episodes. That is not the case here at all. This episode can easily stand among the best of the original Scooby-Doo! series and the formula and the characters are fully in place from the very beginning. The character are just a likable and funny here as they would be later and there is surprisingly not a second which they feel out of character with their later selves. While this may not be the funniest Scooby episode, there are quite a few good gags here and out of all the times Velma loses her glasses this is one of the funniest. This episode also perfectly captures the same old haunted house movie feel that the best Scooby episodes capture, heavily due to the excellent background art.

All in all a great start to a beloved franchise.
