Movie Review: No Time to Die

Michael's Movie Grade: B

A very fun, if overly long Bond movie.

This movie's storyline offers nothing new or inventive to the Bond franchise, but it is so well handled you may not care. One of the best things Daniel Craig's James Bond is that he is one of the easiest to truly connect to emotionally. In this department the character is in top form. You really care about him here and therefore all the emotional moments hit extremely well (especially the ending). This storyline while being relatively simplistic, feels like it is on a larger scale than most films in the franchise, something that is necessary for our farewell to Daniel Craig as James Bond. The action scenes are fantastic. Like the story, they feel like they are on a larger scale than normal. They are also a lot of fun. This movie also has a lot of great dialogue. While it may have less humor than many James Bond movies, when it is funny, it is really funny.

On the downside this film no reason to be this long. It clocks in at around 2 hours and 43 minutes. Yet as you watch it you can realize that a lot could have been left out and the story would still work just as good. There are even characters that could have been completely left out and made the film feel tighter and less stretched out. I understand that this is a larger scale movie and many of those are rather long. Yet a movie doesn't need to be long to establish itself as something larger and sometimes I wish more filmmakers would keep that in mind. This film also suffers from a rather weak villain. Rami Malek is obviously given his all to this performance, but that can not take away from a character that is simply a walking cliché.

Maybe not the best Bond movie, but still a really fun ride.
