Movie Review: Venom: Let There Be Carnage

Michael's Movie Grade: B-

A surprisingly fun sequel.

What works really well in this movie is the relationship between Eddie and Venom. They bicker and fight all the time but deep down you truly get the sense that they really care about each other. Many of their arguments and bickering are pretty darn funny and a joy to listen to and watch. This is pure odd couple style comedy and it is fantastic. Yet underneath all this there is a real and believable friendship that is surprisingly quite touching. While I doubt anyone is going to cry watching this film, there is enough emotional resonance in this part of the movie to make one truly care about what is going on and what to see these two work their problems out. This whole film has a really good sense of humor and there were quite a few times, I and the audience with me laughed out loud watching this. The movie also benefits from a really good villain. This villain is delightfully creepy and twisted. This is further emphasized by Woody Haralson's performance. True this performance is quite over the top, but so is the character, so it works really well. This character is dark and creepy but he is also a lot of fun to watch, making him exactly what one would want out of a comic book movie villain.

On the downside this film has quite a bit of clumsy and forced dialogue and the supporting characters can be really bland and boring (this is especially true of the villain's girlfriend).

All in all this is a highly enjoyable comic book film and a better than excepted sequel.

P.S. Make sure you see the mid-credits scene, it is awesome.
