Cowboy Church #39

Hello my friends and welcome back to another round of Cowboy Church.

Today's musical selection begins with Roy Rogers and Dale Evans with their 1973 recording of In the Sweet By and Bye. This is followed by Ralph Stanley with a lovely recording of When I Wake Up to Sleep No More. Next is one of the best singing cowboys of the modern era, Don Edwards with Drift Along Lonely Cowboy. This song comes from his must hear 2009 gospel album, Heaven on Horseback. Next comes The Sons of The Pioneers with their 1937 recording of One More River to Cross. Our good friend Leonard Slye (aka Roy Rogers) takes the lead vocal here, but like many of the best Sons of the Pioneers recordings, the highlight is the group's great harmonies. The incredible Hawaiian steel guitar player, Sam Koki joins the boys on this recording and does a fine job. This is followed by Wilf Carter with his self-penned Let's Go Back to the Bible. Next comes The Gospel Plowboys with their 2016 recording of It is Well With My Soul. After this is Johnny Cash singing his own self penned  He'll Be a Friend. This song comes from his incredible 1959 album, Hymns By Johnny Cash. This was Johnny's second album at Columbia records. Earlier he had worked for Sun records where the producer Sam Phillips wouldn't let Johnny make a gospel album feeling gospel music was not making money in the way that rock and roll or country could. Johnny had dreamed of being a gospel singer for a long time so he made sure to make a gospel album not long after leaving Sun. So it is true to say that Hymns By Johnny Cash was a true passion project for John. This is followed by Sons of San Joaquin with their 1997 recording of Read the Bible. Today's musical selection ends with Carl T. Spargue with his 1928 recording of Cowman's Prayer.

Today's movie is The Man From Music Mountain (1938) starring the one and only Gene Autry. This film is full of wall to wall music and songs, with the pesky plot sometimes getting in the way, when Gene stops singing. Not everyone was impressed with this movie when it came out as evidenced by an exhibitors review from the Motion Picture Herald, which stated, "Definitely not as good of a picture as 'The Old Barn Dance.' We had several walkouts on it. Gene Autry alone won't be enough for our patrons. He needs story and casting support." Another exhibitor's review was even more negative stating "Plenty kicks. Kids all ask when's amateur night again. My patrons boo these shows." Some other exhibitor's review though show a more positive response. One stated "I can always depend on Autry to keep my patrons smiling and my business going. This is as great as the newest one he made in 1942." Another stated "A great Saturday picture that stood them in the aisles. Business almost double average Saturday. Smiley Burnett turns in his most comical performance. In the future am going to play all Autry's on Tuesday- Wednesday dates. Just let your patrons know Autry is going to play and they'll do the rest. Don't forget, fellows this is the kind of picture that makes the cashier think she is playing the piano instead of a ticket machine."

I am having trouble getting the video on here the usual way so click here to watch the movie.

For we live by faith, not by sight. 2 Corinthians 5:7

You see that a person is considered righteous by what they do and not by faith alone. James 2:24

Who is it that overcomes the world? Only the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God. James 5:5
Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith and in purity. 1 Timothy 4:12

But Scripture has locked up everything under the control of sin, so that what was promised, being given through faith in Jesus Christ, might be given to those who believe. Galatians 3:22

Thank you for joining me come back next week for more Cowboy Church. Happy trails to you until we meet again.
