Michael's Movie Grade: B
Quite funny raunchy comedy from Bollywood.
This movie takes a simple idea and uses it to put in as many silly and immature but funny jokes as it can. These jokes come at us quickly and most of them hit very well. However these jokes would not be as funny if the cast didn't deliver them as well as they did. Akshay Kuma gets a great and all too rare chance to show off his comedic chops. He does so extremely well and his comedic chemistry with his often time on screen costar Kareena Kapoor is incredible. Yet Diljit Donanjh and Kiara Advani still manage to deliver some of the movie's funniest moments as over the top but somehow grounded characters. I laughed out loud watching this movie much more often than I thought I would or that I do at most of today's raunchy comedies.
This movie does take a more dramatic turn towards the end. Honestly I am a bit split on how I felt about this. The drama is quite well done and surprisingly quite touching. It also carries with it a great message of not letting our anger and disappointment in the bad things in life take away from our appreciation of the real miracles that take place in front of us the whole time. This is an important message and one that the film delivers quite well. These scenes also work so well because the help show us how the characters are more than the simple sitcom-like stereotypes they so easily could have been. However at the same time, the movie doesn't transition from comedy to drama all that effectively. The drama often seems to be coming out of nowhere instead of being something that was built up to earlier. Making this worse is that the comedy just suddenly and unexpectedly leaves the film, instead of becoming less prevalent little by little to where we don't fully notice it. Because of this the seriousness of these scenes feels completely at odds with what came before. It is like we switched movies towards the end of the film and although both are very well done on their own terms, they can be jarring when placed together. Still this fault is certainly pales in comparison to how much fun this movie is.
If you want to have a good time at the movies, this film is a delightful choice.
