Michael's Movie Grade: F
Do you want to see over an hour and a half of talking animals telling horrible jokes in the most obnoxious way possible? If so this movie is for you. Everyone else better stay far away though.
There are bad movies and then there are movies that leave in you complete shock by how simply bad they are. Dolittle is the latter. As stated before too much time in this film is taken up by awful humor. This is about as unfunny and annoying as comedy can get. There is a running joke where a goose thinks that various vegetables are medical tools and believe it or not this is one of the better jokes in this movie. These jokes are not only bad in and of themselves but they have even worse delivery. Most of the animals are given obnoxious and annoying voices (provided by actors who are much better than this) and spend too much time being very noisy (am I the only one who doesn't understand why two characters looking at each other and screaming for long periods of time has become such a popular joke in family movies? (I find it extremely annoying myself)). However the human characters get to join in on this awful humor too. The villain especially gets in on this as he spends more time telling terrible jokes than ever seeming to be a threat. I wish more of the time spent on this horrible excuse for comedy was spent on the story and characters. The story has a few good ideas in it, but the way this story is told is awful. It is extremely rushed and jumbled together. This movie has the same effect of reading a quick plot summary over reading an actual story. The filmmakers seem afraid that if they stop the noise and constant movement, and actually tell the story that the viewers will lose any interest. This makes me feel as if the movie is talking down to me, instead of treating me like I have brain to think for myself. The characters are strictly stereotypes of movie characters and are never believable or relatable.
I came into this movie not excepting much and it turned out to be much worse than I possible thought it could be. Avoid at all costs.
