Movie Review: Young Woman and the Sea

Michael's Movie Grade: B

A very well-made but familiar feel-good sports movie.

This Disney film tells the true story of Trudy Ederle, the first woman to swim the English Channel. Though it is quite cliché at times, it is clear that the filmmakers understand why people are attracted to these types of movies. This is a film that approaches every scene with complete sincerity and because of this we feel ourselves getting completely caught up in the story. The main character is incredibly likable, and this film gets us on her side from the very start. It is simply impossible not to root for this character as the film perfectly sets her up just as the type of underdog that we love to root for. Not only are the odds against her at many times but she is also a person with a truly great and caring heart. This is especially shown in her relationship with her sister. This relationship is very heartwarming and there is simply a great chemistry between the two. Daisy Ridley is also wonderful in this film. She brings a lot of humanity and charm to this character. This is one of her best performances. The movie also benefits from a delightful musical score from Amelia Warner. It is also a very handsome looking movie. While there is no part of the visual filmmaking that calls attention to itself, this movie is always a delight to look at. Director Joachim Rønning (who has previously directed Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales (2017) and Maleficent: Mistress of Evil (2019) for Disney) keeps the movie moving at a fast pace and never lets it once become dull.

This is not a perfect movie though. The clichés can give this whole film an air of familiarity. There is also some corny dialogue, bland supporting characters and comedic moments that fall flat.

Yet despite these flaws this film does accomplish just what it set out to do. It is a feel-good movie that makes you feel good. And with that I definitely gives this my recommendation.
