Movie Review: Bad Boys: Ride or Die

Michael's Movie Grade: B

One of the best entries in this series.

Of course, the main reason most people go to see a Bad Boys movie is to watch Will Smith and Martian Lawerance play off each other. These two have wonderful chemistry together and it is always fun to watch them share the screen. This is definitely true here, as the duo shines here just as well as they did in the first movie. For much of the film, Martian Lawerance plays the comic and Will Smith the straight man. However, there are times that the roles can be reversed and the duo shines just as much during these scenes. As for the comedy between the two it is often times laugh out loud funny. While the original film may have been 29 years ago, the two keep the same comic energy that they had from the start. Though there are some gags that miss the mark, they are in the minority. The whole audience was laughing throughout the comedic scenes. Of course, the Bad Boys movies are just as much action flicks as they are comedies and this film worked just as well as an action picture. This is especially true in the great action-packed climax, which is over the top, but a heck of a lot of fun. Beyond the action and the comedy, this film works very well with the character-driven drama. Like 2020's Bad Boys for Life (both that movie and this one were directed by the team of Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah), this film digs a little deeper into who these characters are and that works quite well. Like in all the Bad Boys films, the relationship between the two main characters is the heart of the movie. Beneath all their bickering and ribbing of one another, there is a lot of warmth to their friendship. This plays an important role here as we delve into Mike undergoing anxiety attacks as he fears that his job as a cop may put his new wife in danger. Though Marcus will of course tease him about this at times, he also shows true concern for his friend in some moments that are surprisingly touching. The same can be said for Mike worry about Marcus' health as he has heart problems. Though this of course leads to jokes you can again see just how much they care about each other. This movie also delves into Mike's relationship with his criminal son. This again can be surprising touch at times. Despite this though, the film never becomes too serious, instead knowing that it must keep its lighthearted charm.

The movie does have its flaws though. The villain is kind of bland without a whole lot to him and the same can be said for Mike and Marcus' fellow cops. Also, if you look for plot holes in this film, you will easily find them as there are somethings that don't fully add up. However, since none of these reasons are what this movie's audience wants to see, that don't hurt the film too much.

Though it has its flaws, this film delivers exactly what you want from a Bad Boys film.
