All-New Super Friends Hour: The Mysterious Time Creatures (1977)

This is the third segment of the sixth episode of The All-New Super Friends Hour, unlike most other Super Friends formats, this one had hour long episodes that were made up of various shorter cartoons. The first segment would be an adventure staring two members (or three in some cases as Batman and Robin would often team with another Super Friend) of the Super Friends. The second would be a morality play staring the Wonder Twins. The third would be a typical half hour Super Friends adventure. The fourth and last segment would feature one of the main Super Friends teaming up with a special DC Comics guest star.

In this cartoon an evil alien named Dictor sets to take over Earth with a powerful magical medallion he stole from his planet. The Super Friends team up with President Kalmo (from Dictor's home planet) to stop him.

This is a wonderful episode. Dictor is a great villain. He has a great design that makes him truly look threatening and his evil voice is wonderful as well. There is a real sense of suspense throughout this episode that works quite well. One scene where Dictor uses on the ray on Kalmo specially makes this cartoon feel all the more suspenseful as it has a slight edge of creepiness to it (though nothing this show's young audience couldn't handle) The action scenes are quite exciting as well, especially some of the early ones underwater and the great climatic action sequence. This episode also features some of the best humor in any Super Friends segment of this time. The moments with the super friends as kids was truly funny as was the scene with Janya as a mouse. There is also some delightful superhero corniness here, especially with Batman having a special compartment for mice in his belt. There is also some great background art here. While it does not stand out as much as the backgrounds of other episodes of this time, it is still very pleasant to look at.

This is a delightful cartoon.
