Movie Review: Cottontail

Michael's Movie Grade: A-

A beautiful drama film that is a co-production from Japan and the UK.

This film takes a simple premise like a Japanese man traveling to the UK to spread his deceased wife's ashes at a place she loved and turns it into an incredibly emotional movie. While I don't want to give away more of the story than that (it is best if you go into this film knowing little about it), I will tell you that you will go through an emotional rollercoaster watching Cottontail. What makes this movie truly special is the sheer range of emotions you will feel watching it. There are moments of great sadness and moments of great joy. Some of the flashbacks are truly difficult to watch. Yet I felt such a strong emotional pull I could not look away. Still this movie is far from a complete dirge, despite some truly sad moments there is also a sense of hope underneath all this. Even in the darkest moments, this movie is not afraid to look at the beauty that still exists in our lives especially having others along for the journey in both the dark and happy times. This all leads to an ending that truly left tears in my eyes. This is one of those films that you will leave with a great appreciation for the little things in life. The film also benefits from simply beautiful cinematography by Mark Wolf. Every shot is simply gorgeous to look at. Because of this you must see this on the big screen. Yet every shot is not simply there to look beautiful but also makes all the emotional scenes even stronger.

A must-see.
