Michael's Movie Grade: B
A fast paced and fun DC animated movie.
As someone who likes the silly and fun side of superhero stories this film is right up my alley. It is full of fast paced humor and action as well as many one liners (many of them delightfully corny). This is a superhero movie that doesn't take itself too seriously and instead asks us to simply enjoy the ride. Luckily the film simply is a lot of fun. The storyline (while often familiar) is full of the type of silly charm that has made superhero stories appeal to so many of us through the decades as well as some delightfully fun twists and turns. Catwoman manages to be very likable without taking away what makes her a Batman villain. She is still a thief and is not above using trickery to get what she wants. Yet she has a real charm to her and the people she is stealing from, and cheating are horrible people, so it is not hard to root for her as she does it. What works equally well with this character is her chemistry with Batwoman. It is obvious these two have a history and while this history is not fully explained to us it does make every scene between them delightful. There is a lot of playful banter that is often quite funny. There is also a bit of sexual tension which works perfectly in scenes where Catwoman is using Batwoman's attraction to her to get what she wants.
On the downside this movie tries too hard to look like anime and doesn't truly capture the feeling of the best anime. The animation can also feel pretty stiff at times. This movie also tries to cram too many villains into it and even like some of the villains who were crammed in, there appearances did feel gratuitous.
All in all, if you are like me and enjoy the lighter and more fun side of superhero stories this should be right down your alley.
