Movie Review: Birds of Prey: And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn

Michael's Movie Grade: F

Loud, obnoxious and just plain irritating, I am not even sure if this film is an improvement over the horrible Suicide Squad. In fact you can argue that this is just as bad.

My main problem with this movie is Harley Quinn herself. I liked her in Batman: The Animated Series where she premiered, but I hate the Margot Robbie version we got in both this and Suicide Squad. Robbie is a talented actress, but for some reason her playing Harley Quinn is like fingernails on a chalkboard to me. She simply irritates me to the point where I want to walk out of the theatre. The problem is that the whole movie centers around her. She is constantly present and is never once actually funny, charming or anything but annoying. Unfortunately she doesn't only serve as a character, but the narrator as well. So even in scenes that she does not appear onscreen, I had to listen to this annoying character. One gets the feeling that this movie tried to do a Deadpool like approach without understanding what made the Deadpool films actually work. Harley breaks the fourth wall plenty of times in this movie, but unlike Deadpool she never made me laugh.

Anyone actually looking for a Birds of Prey movie needs to look somewhere else. The Birds of Prey are supporting characters in their own film, while the most annoying character gets to play the lead. With this in mind, it is no wonder these characters are so underdeveloped. They are never given the opportunity to actually establish who they are as characters or why we should care about them. This is more than a little disappointing. I am not an avid comic reader but I have read enough to know how awesome the Birds of Prey are and that this is their big screen debut can't help but feel underwhelming. The actresses playing them do the best with what they are given, but they are not given much.

Something that really gets on my nerves with bad movies is when they won't shut up and this movie won't shut up. For its instance on Harley being as loud and irritating as possible to the way too noisy use of music, this movie simply got on my nerves with its constant noise.

This is also an extremely unpleasant movie. It is simply filled with characters that do horrible thing after horrible thing. The problem is these actions seem to be here simply to get the movie an R rating. These scenes contain no sense of either fun or depth but instead simply make the film feel mean spirited and hard to watch.

Just when it seemed like DC movies where getting back on track a film like this has to come out. Avoid this like the plague. Both comic book and movie fans deserve better than this.
