A wonderful episode.
There is so much to enjoy about this episode starting with a wonderful trip back to the 1970's. Once again there is a wonderful sense of atmosphere throughout this episode. This is fully shown even before the title of the show appears. This is especially shown through bot the sets and the cinematography. There is a wonderful early action scene, where we get to see Loki truly show off his magical powers in a very fun way. This episode also has a lot of humor throughout and much of it is really funny. Once again there are some great comic moments before the title of the show even appears. There are even some great bits of comedy in the darker scenes. This is especially seen during the automat scene and the scene in the McDonalds. These scenes show just how great of a job this season has been doing at balancing the darker story with lighter moments.
Even with all the humor there is still a lot of suspense, which works just as well if not better than the last episode. The interrogation scenes are especially wonderful. They are not only full of a real sense of dread but also do a wonderful job of exploring just who Loki and Mobius are as characters. The ending of this episode is a truly great cliffhanger that leaves us with a real sense of dread. Again this season is doing a wonderful job of setting up just why Kang is the greatest threat in the MCU yet.
This episode marks the directorial debut of Dan Deleeuw. He has worked as a special effects supervisor on quite a few MCU films beginning with Iron Man 3 (2013). He has also been a second unit director on Avengers: Endgame (2019), Eternals (2021) and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania (2023). If this episode is any indication, he has a great career as a director ahead of him.
