Michael's Movie Grade: B
A very charming romance.
The storyline of this film is a bit soap opera like, but the movie makes up for it with pure charm. Even those who may not like this movie, will have to admit it is a very handsome film. The cinematography and the use of location shooting (all in France), just simply make this an irresistibly beautiful looking picture. Through the visuals this captures the type of idyllic summer that you never want to end. In this way the film is delightfully reminiscent of some of the best cinema of Éric Rohmer. When the movie ended, I felt a bit of sadness as I wanted to live in this world a little longer. The characters are also wonderful here. Each one felt completely real to me, and I enjoyed simply spending time with them. As well as feeling cozy in this way, the movie is also full of very intelligent dialogue that leaves one with a lot of food for thought. This dialogue provides a very clever and insightful meditation on love, family and summer romances.
The story of this film may be too overly melodramatic but despite this, I found myself caught up in its charms.
