Hello my friends and welcome back for another service of Cowboy Church.
Today's musical selection begins with Roy Rogers, Dale Evans, Roy Clark and The Sons of the Pioneers with a gospel medley on the TV variety show Hee Haw. This gospel medley includes the songs Old Time Religion, Cowboy Camp Meeting, Ezekial Saw the Wheel and Do Lord.
This is followed by The Chuck Wagon Gang with their 1936 recording of Kneel at the Cross. This is the original Chuck Wagon Gang here which consist of father, D.P. Carter, son, Jim (Ernest) Carter and daughters, Rose (Lola) Carter Karnes and Anna (Effie) Carter Gordon Davis. Since they share this last name with another country music family, they have often been referred to as "the other Carter Family." This recording comes from the group's first studio recording session. It was recorded at the Gunter Hotel in San Antonio, TX on November 25, 1936.
Next comes the Osborne Brothers with Leaning on the Everlasting Arms. This hymn began with a man named Anthony Showalter. As a fan of gospel music and an elder in a Presbyterian church, he held many "singing schools" at various churches in the south. One day he received two letters from former students who were struggling after their wives had passed. To respond to these letters, Showalter consulted scripture. He came across Deuteronomy 33:27, "The eternal God is thy refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms." After reading this verse lyrics for a song chorus went through his head and he wrote down, "“Leaning, leaning, safe and secure from all alarms; Leaning, leaning, leaning on the everlasting arms.” After using this in the letters to his former students he sent this chorus to his friend hymnist, Elisha Hoffman. In the letter he also wrote, “Here is the chorus for a good hymn from Deuteronomy 33:27, but I can’t come up with the verses.” Hoffman then wrote the rest of the lyrics to which Showalter put to music. The hymn was published in 1887.
Afterwards is Little Jimmy Dickens with his 1951 recording of The Bible on the Table.
Then is T. Texas Tyler singing Praise the Lord (Salvation Has Been Brought Down).
Next is Johnny Cash with My God is Real from his 1962 gospel album, Hymns of the Heart. This is John's second full gospel album. His first gospel album, 1958's Hymns by Johnny Cash, was much more in the style of John's usual music at the time, while this second album is in much more a traditional gospel style. This song reminds us that despite God not speaking to us in the same way he spoke to Adam and Eve or Moses, where he would speak in an audible voice, he still speaks to us constantly through our mind and our hearts. We can feel him move inside of us and this is proof not only of his existence but his love and desire to be with us.
Now for Connie Smith with When the Book of Life Is Read. This song was written by one of the greatest singer/songwriters of all time, Hank Willaims and this version of the song comes from Connie's 1975 album, Sings Hank Williams Gospel.
Today's musical selection ends with The Sons of the San Joaquin with How Big is God from their 2017 album, One More Ride.
Now for a message from S.M. Lockridge.
Now for a classic short film, Bronco Billy's Last Hold Up (1912).
