Movie Review: Transformers: Rise of the Beasts

Michael’s Movie Grade: C+

This is not a great film that will change the minds of anyone who dismisses the previous Transformers movies but it definitely provides a fun trip to the movies.

This film introduces a new director to the Transformers movies (though he did direct an episode of the animated TV series, Transformers: Earthspark) Steven Caple Jr. (the director of Creed II). Caple obviously gets why fans like this franchise, and he provides them with exactly what they want. This is a fast moving and action-packed film that is never once boring. This film is over two hours, but it never feels like it. Though it does have times where it digs into the lore, it never does this at the expense of a good time. Speaking about a good time the action scenes here are awesome. They are exciting, well timed, well staged and they often feel larger than life. These scenes are a lot of fun to watch, and they look great on a big screen (if you see this movie definitely see it in Dolby or IMAX). Your favorite Transformers here are just as cool as you remember them and even the human characters aren’t too bad. The human characters are quite basic, but they are also likable and feel like the actually contribute something to the story (something most Transformers films seem to have trouble with). This likability even makes for a few heartfelt moments that kind of work. The CGI here is often quite great and makes this world feel more real to us. In fact, this film is often a treat to look at.

This film definitely does have its problems though. The story is very familiar, and you can often pretty much always guess what will happen next. This even extends to the dialogue, which is so cliché that you can often finish a character’s sentences and even know what they are going to say before they speak. The humor here also doesn’t really work and most of the jokes fall kind of flat.

Again, this may not be a great movie, but it provides one with a fun trip to the movies and sometimes we need just that.
