Cowboy Church #17

Hello my friends and welcome back for another round of Cowboy Church.

We start our music selection off with the Sons of the Pioneers' 1948 recording of Read the Bible Everyday. This song was written by the Sons' own Tim Spencer. Next comes Gene Autry performing The Angel Song in a clip from his Cinecolor feature film The Strawberry Roan (1948). Gene co-wrote this song with Curt Massey and Mary Millard. It was released as a single the year before this movie. Next comes a lovely gospel ballad written and performed by Willie Nelson, called Goin' Home. This song is from one of Willie's best albums and an album that helped launch the outlaw country movement Yesterday's Wine from 1971. This song perfectly mixes Willie's tough cowboy persona with a true gospel feeling. Next comes Roy Rogers and Dale Evans performing the gospel classic Softly and Tenderly. Next comes Roy Acuff's 1944 recording of The Prodigal Son. This song was written by Roy Acuff's partner Fred Rose (the two formed the publishing company Acuff-Rose) specifically for Roy Acuff to sing. This song was credited to Fred Rose's penname, Floyd Jenkins. The melody of this song was borrowed from an earlier gospel hit song by Acuff called Precious Jewel. Last comes Hank Williams performing the song Thy Burdens are Greater Than Mine. This song was written by Pee Wee King. It is believed that he wanted to sell this song to Roy Acuff, but felt Roy would more likely buy the song if Hank would record it as a demo. Hank recorded this song as a demo in 1951 and later that same year Roy would record the song himself.
