Cowboy Church #245

Hello my friends and welcome back for another service of Cowboy Church.

Today's musical selection starts with Roy Rogers and Dale Evans with Jesus Loves the Little Children. This comes from a 1955 Little Golden Record that also included them singing The Good Lord is Going to Take Care of You.   This song was written by C. Herbert Woolston and is said to have been inspired by Matthew 19:14 (“Let the children come to me. Don’t stop them! For the Kingdom of Heaven belongs to such as these.”) The song is to the tune of the 1864 Civil War song, Tramp Tramp Tramp (written by George Fredrick Root). Roy and Dale only sing the refrain of this song as that is all that was commonly used in Sunday schools. However, these are not the only lyrics to this song. To see the full lyrics click here

Afterwards is The Whites with This World is Not Our Home. Though we are currently living in this world, we are only passing through. For those of us who believe on the name of Jesus Christ, our real home is in Heaven with our lord and savior. Everything in this world is temporal but Heaven is eternal.

Then comes Johnny Cash and U2 with The Wanderer. This song was written by Bono in 1993 (under the working title The Preacher). The song was inspired by the book of Ecclesiastes, but takes place in a future time with a narrator who is worried about the lack of God in society. It is considered to be one of Bono's best songs, but for some reason whenever he tried to record it himself, it didn't work for him. Then he came up with the brilliant idea of having Johnny Cash sing the song (this idea came to Bono when he learned Johnny was going to be in Dublin). Bono would say that Johnny would teach him a lot about how to deliver a song like this during this recording section giving advice about how to put over each word effectively. Johnny told a reporter, "I don't know if it will ever be released or even what it's called." The song would be released on the 1993 U2 album, Zooropa  (one of U2's most experimental albums) and John would state that this song gave him a sense of artistic renewal.

That is followed by one of my favorite modern-day singers, Anne Wilson with one her newest songs, Rebel.

Then comes The Sons of the Pioneers with their 1937 recording of Power in the Blood. Though it may be simple doctrine that we have heard since Sunday school, I hope we never forget how much power there truly is in the blood of Jesus. No matter what temptations and struggles we may face in life, Jesus' blood spilled on Calvary's cross has overcome all of it. With man something may be impossible but with God all things are possible.

Next is Jimmie Davis with his 1951 recording of Mansion Over the Hilltop. This song has an important lesson for all of us. We should not be working to get material possessions in this world, but we should have our eyes set towards the things of God. If we do this we will surely reap our reward in Heaven.

Afterwards is The Charlie Daniels Band with   Preachin', Prayin', Singin' from their 2005 gospel album, Songs from the Longleaf Pines. Unlike the previous gospel albums from the group this album is not made up of original songs but rather classic folk and bluegrass gospel music. It also has a bluegrass sound unlike the other albums' more southern rock sound.

Today's musical selection ends with Jim and Jesse with Are You Washed in the Blood. Though baptism by water is a wonderful thing and a step that every believer should take, it cannot bring salvation. The only thing that can bring salvation is to be baptized in the blood of Jesus. For if you have not given your life to Jesus, even a beautiful thing like baptism is made pointless.

Now for an episode of Gene Autry's TV show.

Now for a message from the Revend Billy Graham.

For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Jeremiah 29:11

Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Matthew 11:28

And hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us. Romans 5:5

Christ is the culmination of the law so that there may be righteousness for everyone who believes. Romans 10:4

For the Lord gives wisdom; from his mouth come knowledge and understanding. Proverbs 2:6

Be very careful, then, how you live—not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil. Ephesians 5:15-16

How much better to get wisdom than gold, to get insight rather than silver! Proverbs 16:16

Without faith it is impossible to please God, and he rewards those who seek him. Hebrews 11:6

I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. Galatians 2:20

Then the Lord God formed the man of dust from the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living creature. Genesis 2:7
