Movie Review: The Fall Guy

Michael's Movie Grade: B

A real crowd pleaser.

It is appropriate for this movie to be directed by David Leitch, a former stunt man himself. This movie follows a stunt man, who gets himself in over his head trying to help the girl he loves, who is also the director of the film he is working on. With a former stunt man behind the camera, this film turns out to be a great homage to these often overlooked but crucial people who work on these movies.

What is probably most impressive about this film is how well it balances the comedy, action and romance. This movie belongs to each of those genres. Yet instead of these elements getting in the way of each other they seem to blend effortlessly. This leads to a movie that is hard not to enjoy. This is especially true because the elements work well on their own as well. While there are some comedy moments that fall flat the ones that are funny are wonderful. There were multiple times when I (as well as the whole packed theater audience) laughed out loud. The action scenes are a lot of fun, which is of course an incredibly important element in any film about stunt men. The romance is cliché and there is little we haven't seen many times before. However, it works because Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt have such wonderful chemistry together. The playful chemistry between these two make even the most cliché moments work. This movie is so much fun that the 2 hours simply fly by.

This film has plenty of large plot holes and things that don't make sense. However, since this movie doesn't take itself too seriously it easily overcomes these flaws.

This movie is simply a lot of fun.
