Meet the Bumsteads

I admit to being a big fan of the Blondie movies. Sure they may not be cinematic masterpieces, but when I am in the mood for something that is corny but easily puts a smile on my face, these films do just the trick. For those of you who are not familiar with the Blondie movies, they were a series of 28 feature films from 1938 through 1950 based on the Blondie Newspaper comic strip by Chic Young (that comic strip began in 1930 and new strips are still running in newspapers today). They stared Arthur Lake as Dagwood Bumstead and Penny Singleton (cartoon fans might know her as the voice of Jane Jetson) as his wife, Blondie. These two did not only play the characters on the movie screens but also in a Blondie radio show that ran from 1939 to 1950. This radio show proved to be just as much fun as the movies.

The following is a 1939 article from Radio Mirror that discusses the stars of both the movies and radio show. If you have any trouble reading it, click on the pages and use your touch screen to zoom in.
