Movie Review: Amsterdam

Michael's Movie Grade: B

A really fun period film.

This movie is one that often falls into quite a few different genres including mystery, thriller, comedy and historical drama. Yet it does a surprisingly great job of balancing all these different tones. No genre change feels abrupt or takes you out of the movie because it all comes directly from the characters and the story and therefore flows quite naturally. This also keeps the film moving at a quick pace and even though it is 2 hours and 14 minutes, it never once feels overlong. This movie also benefits from a fantastic cast. Not only are the leads played by Christian Bale, Margot Robbie and John David Washington, but a huge portion of the cast is made up of A-list actors (Robert De Niro, Chris Rock, Anya Taylor-Joy and Zoe Saldaña to name a few). Yet these actors do not feel like they are only there to have big name stars play the characters but because they are perfect for their parts. These actors give some incredibly fine performances and add a lot to each and every scene. This film also does a fantastic job capturing a real period feel of the 1930's and 10's and this adds a uniquely engaging flavor to the movie.

This film does have its problems though. The narration can feel a little distracting and unnecessary, especially when it changes between characters. Also some of the twists and turns are needlessly convoluted and often make less sense the more you think about them.

This is simply a really enjoyable trip to the movies.
